Recognise: You're Allowed to Pause
August looks different to July. Schools are on holiday, routines dissolve, and suddenly everyone around you seems to be talking about long lazy days and making the most of the sunshine.
For a lot of people, that's not really what August feels like.
If you're juggling kids who are off school with a job that doesn't pause for the holidays, you know the reshuffle that happens every summer. Childcare becomes a puzzle. Your calendar gets messier. Somewhere in the mix there might be ageing parents who still need a phone call, a visit, or a hospital appointment sorted. Add a friend group who's out every weekend and can't understand why you're not joining in, and August can end up feeling heavier than the rest of the year, not lighter.
Recognise is where we start, the first stage of Realign & Rise, and this month it's asking something specific of you: recognise when you need to pause.
Not a two week holiday. Just a pause. An evening where you don't say yes to one more thing. A morning where the to-do list waits. Permission to sit down before you've earned it.
The part that catches most people out though, is not just that the pausing is hard, it's what happens in your head when you do.
You cancel plans and immediately start listing reasons why you shouldn't have. You snap at the kids because you're running on empty, then spend the rest of the day quietly punishing yourself for it. You watch everyone else's summer online and decide you're getting it wrong somehow, that you should be coping better, doing more, feeling more grateful.
That inner voice gets loud in August. It's rarely fair.
If a friend told you they'd cancelled plans because they were exhausted, or lost their patience after a long day of holiday childcare and work, you wouldn't call them a failure. You'd tell them that sounds like a lot, and that it makes complete sense they're tired.
That's the relationship worth building this month. Not with everyone else. With yourself.
Self-forgiveness isn't about letting yourself off the hook for something that actually needs addressing. It's about noticing where you're carrying blame that was never warranted in the first place, and putting it down.
So this August, alongside the school holiday childcare and the work deadlines and the family calls, see if you can do two things. Recognise when you need to pause, and let yourself off the hook when the pause doesn't look the way you thought it would.
You're not failing at summer. You're a person with real limits, doing a genuinely hard juggling act. That deserves a bit more kindness than you've probably been giving yourself.
If you'd like some support with that, The Energy Drop In lands in your inbox twice a month with reflections like this one, plus a little grounding along the way.
