What do I actually want? Coming back to the question you stopped asking

You know how to get things done.

You show up. You solve problems. You look after people. You make decisions. You keep everything moving.

From the outside, you probably look like someone who has it all together.

Somewhere along the way, though, you may have stopped asking yourself a very simple question:

"What do I actually want?"

Not what you should want. Not what would make everyone else happy. Not the sensible or expected thing to do.

What you want.

How your wants go quiet

When you're constantly responding to the needs of work, family, relationships and life, your own wants get quieter.

At first it's a conscious choice. You put something aside because someone else needs you. Then it becomes a habit. Eventually you can be so disconnected from your own preferences that you honestly don't know what you want anymore.

Here's the thing. You haven't lost your wants. You've lost the thread that connects you to them.

It's not only about being happy

Reconnecting isn't just asking "What would make me happy?" It's also asking "What matters to me?"

Sometimes we feel unhappy or unsettled not because life is objectively bad, but because we keep compromising the things that matter most to us.

We might value:

  • freedom, but have built a life with very little flexibility

  • connection, but spend hardly any meaningful time with the people they love

  • honesty, but constantly hold back what they really think

  • creativity, but never make space for it

  • family, but feel permanently consumed by responsibility

  • calm, but live in perpetual urgency

  • independence, but defer to everyone else's needs

You can be living a perfectly acceptable life and still be living out of alignment with your values.

Your inner compass: head, heart and gut

Your head says, "This makes sense." It looks at logic, practicality, consequences, expectations, and what you've been taught is sensible.

Your heart says, "This matters to me." It connects with desire, meaning, relationships, joy, and what feels important.

Your gut says, "Something about this feels right... or it doesn't." It notices unease, expansion, resistance, a sense of knowing, and the things you can't always explain.

So what happens when your head says yes, your heart says maybe, and your gut is quietly screaming no?

Or when your head says, "That's ridiculous," but your heart and gut both say, "This matters"?

Reconnection isn't about ignoring your head and following your intuition blindly. It's about creating enough space to listen to all three, then noticing where they agree and where they don't.

When the decision feels wrong

You might make a decision that looks absolutely right on paper. The salary's good. The opportunity makes sense. Everyone tells you it's the sensible choice.

Yet something inside keeps saying, "This isn't it."

That doesn't automatically mean you should walk away. It means there's something worth listening to.

Why Reconnect is stage three of Realign & Rise

Before you can build something different, it helps to know what you're building towards.

Recognise helps you see what's really going on.

Release creates space by letting go of what no longer serves you.

Reconnect is where we turn back towards you: your values, your needs, your wants, your intuition, your sense of self.

You can't create an aligned life if you've lost touch with the person you're creating it for.

Three ways to start reconnecting

1. What do I actually want?

Take something you're currently deciding, tolerating or feeling frustrated about.

Ask yourself: if I temporarily removed what I think I should do, what would I actually want?

Notice what comes up. You don't have to act on it. You're simply listening.

2. Where am I compromising a value?

Ask: what matters deeply to me that isn't getting enough space in my life right now?

Choose one value. Freedom, family, creativity, honesty, connection, calm, adventure, health, independence, or something else entirely.

Then ask where you're currently living in a way that doesn't honour it.

3. Head, heart or gut?

Think of one decision you've been wrestling with.

Write down: My head says... My heart says... My gut says...

Don't analyse the answers at first. Just listen. Then ask where they're aligned, and where they're pulling you in different directions.

It starts smaller than you think

Reconnecting with yourself doesn't have to mean changing your whole life. Sometimes it starts with something much smaller.

Listening before answering. Pausing before saying yes. Noticing what feels good, what doesn't, and what matters to you. Giving yourself permission to have wants and needs that don't always fit neatly around everyone else's.

Being capable doesn't mean you have to carry everything. Being caring doesn't mean putting yourself last. Being responsible doesn't mean abandoning yourself.

Sometimes the next step isn't about figuring out where you're going. It's about coming back to yourself first.
